(Extra)Ordinary Hero
I’ve been a huge fan of Dave Grohl since the early 1990’s, when he was playing drums with Nirvana. But, I absolutely love the Foo Fighters, they’re one of my favourite rock bands, so I wanted to honour him by creating a large, multi-layered portrait to tell the story of his life and successful career in rock music. The background collage is comprised of many found and cut out images of Grohl's life and amazing music career. Each image was cut out and lovingly pasted together by hand to form a colourful and complex background collage. I wanted to show everything that went into making Dave Grohl the man that he is today, and why he is lovingly known as ‘the nicest man in rock music’ by all of his dedicated fans. He has done so many great things in his career, and had lots of crazy rock ‘n’ roll adventures, and this makes him an almost larger than life character, who is almost universally loved in the music industry and beyond. The actual full length portrait of Grohl was created using layers of colour paper, with details rendered in pencil, colour pencil, fine-line pen and graphic marker. The portrait was then mounted on to a large sheet of 3mm thick clear plastic, then placed on an internal foam board frame, before being enclosed in a black wooden frame, with glass. I can tell you that a lot of Dave Grohl’s music was listened to over the six months that it took me to create such a large piece of artwork. This portrait was created with love and admiration to portray Dave Grohl's life in just one, captured moment, but also to show the many cherished moments in his life.
